Wouldn’t it have been cheaper to rent a ditch witch and use that to trench it out? Not to be an ass or anything, but diesel is not cheap these days.

if you were trenching for the electric company were i live theyd fire your ass you had an opertunity to keep the clods and you wasted it also you wer throwing dirt around the place and not keeping it in a wind row all the dirt would of gone back in with small bucket with 1 track in trench and use a grader bucket in end to clean the grass and pull the clods back even on meterage work its quicker than fannying about putting top soil back
